This marathon event takes place in Tokyo. It was first held in 2007.
In 2013, the Tokyo Marathon was registered in the World Marathon Majors, making it one of the major marathon events of the world. The marathon is also televised, so participants may be show on TV!
The event consists of a 42.195-kilometer full marathon and a 10-kilometer road race. There is also a wheelchair category marathon.
The marathon begins at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, and the course takes runners through major Tokyo attractions and areas, like Tokyo Tower, Asakusa, and Ginza. The differences in elevation across the course is relatively small, making it an easy path to run.
Approximately 38,000 runners participate in the marathon. Every year many people want to enter due to the event’s popularity, and people numbering over 10 times the capacity of participants send in applications.
Every year, around a million people gather along the roads to cheer on participants from the sidelines.
