Expanding rapidly across the Tokyo area, Nikujiru Gyoza Seisakusho Dandadan Sakaba is an izakaya chain that is sure to satisfy your taste buds! I, a major fan of gyoza, decided to give the Ogikubo location a visit the other day. Don't worry; the details are coming right up!

Date of visit: October 2018

The place was packed, the atmosphere lively.

Kanpai! (Cheers!)
Premium malts was on tap for 460 yen.

Basashi (raw horse meat) (780 yen)

You can add ginger, garlic, or salt to your liking.

Melt-in-your-mouth texture! The meat was well marbled and delicious.
This dish will be brought quickly after placing your order, so I suggest ordering it as something to munch on while you wait for the rest of your meal.

“So good it must be evil cilantro salad” (480 yen)

Dandadan’s famous salad. It was a mountain of cilantro with a generous amount of garlic-infused sesame dressing. The nuts were a nice touch, adding texture and flavour to the salad. To those who can’t stomach cilantro, however, you might just consider this “evil cilantro salad.”

Grilled gyoza (450 yen / 6 pieces)

Dandadan Sakaba makes their gyozas in-house from scratch every day. The whole wheat flour skins are chewy but crispy on the outside. And the meat juice. Don’t even get me started. Is it ever amazing! These are gyozas that leave little to be desired. They have other varieties as well: sui gyoza (boiled gyoza) and teba gyoza (chicken wings filled with gyoza stuffing).

I put some of the cilantro salad on top of the gyozas.
Behold: my original cilantro gyoza! Seriously though, give it a try!

When my beer was gone, I ordered a Hoppy.

Since Hoppy, a beer-flavoured beverage, only has an alcohol content of 0.8%, it is usually mixed with a Japanese spirit called shochu. This shop offers second servings of the shochu for 270 yen, and they will bring it to you in a kettle and pour until you say stop. If you like your drinks strong, that’s not a problem! Get them to pour as much as you need—the more you drink, the better a deal it is! Just try not to let yourself get too drunk.

Affordable and delicious, Dandadan Sakaba’s popularity is no surprise.
You can even enjoy a tasty lunch set meal for around 700 yen!
