Hakone Gora Manju from Nakamuraya in Kanagawa
Hakone is a hot spring town in southwestern Kanagawa Prefecture with easy access to the city.
It is home to many ryokan (Japanese inns), and it is a popular location thanks to the wealth of sightseeing spots around as well.
I picked up some Gora Manju from souvenir shop “Nakamuraya” in front of Gora Station, so that’s what I’ll be introducing this time.
These are “Onsen Manju,” something you’ll find at onsen (hot spring) areas across Japan.
The dough, made with flour and brown sugar, is filled with red bean paste.
The manju are seared with the characters for “Gora.”
The outer dough is seasoned with a secret sauce, and it’s packed with plenty of red bean paste made from Hokkaido adzuki beans.
It’s not too sweet and has a delicious soft texture!
You can enjoy these manju warm and steamed at Nakamuraya for just 55 yen each.
Nakamuraya sells general Japanese merchandise as well as traditional crafts in addition to sweets, so it can be fun to pick out some souvenirs while you’re walking around the area!
