Miyazaki "Aoshima" Area Fun Guide
"Aoshima", one of the best resort areas in Kyushu, is located in the southern part of Miyazaki City. It is conveniently located only 30 minutes by car from the city center. One of the charms of the Aoshima area is that the sea, mountains, and rivers are all close together, and the scenery can change at a moment's notice with just a short drive.
The wide roads, including mountain roads, make it easy to drive a rental car. It is also close to the city center, so after enjoying nature in the "Aoshima" area during the day, visitors can enjoy the charm of food as a night activity in "Nishitachi," the largest entertainment district in Miyazaki Prefecture. Day1
When you arrive in the "Aoshima" area, be sure to visit the "Aoshima Shrine". After surfing, go for a walk in the forest and be healed by the negative ions.
Colorful beauty of nature and shrine pavilions Make sure you say hello to "Aoshima Shrine" first
"Aoshima" has a tropical atmosphere with many 300-year-old subtropical plants, including the "birouju(areca tree). Aoshima is a small island with a circumference of 1.5 km and is connected to the opposite shore by the "Yayoi Bridge".
"Aoshima Shrine" sits almost in the center of Aoshima. The entire island is within the precincts of Aoshima Shrine, so please visit the shrine first. Express your gratitude for having made it this far safely and pray for the safety of your journey ahead.
Visitors to the shrine usually pay their respects by dropping money into the offertory box in front of the shrine, but if you apply for a "gokigan" (prayer service), you can go up to the shrine for a special service (Hatsuho-ryo / ceremony fee*: from 5,000 yen). Praying at the venerable shrine on Aoshima will leave you feeling refreshed.
*This is money paid as a gratuity when you ask a shrine to perform a prayer or other service.
One of the best spiritual spots in Japan
Although the date of construction is not clear, the shrine is believed to have been dedicated as early as 1,200 years ago, based on the description in the Kokushi Junshiki. The three deities are Amatsuhidakahikohohodemi no Mikoto, his consort Toyotamahime no Mikoto, and Shiozutsu no Okami. All of these deities are associated with the famous Japanese myth "Yamasachi Umisachi" ("harvests from the mountains and the sea"). Since Yamasachihiko and Toyotamahime no Mikoto were united here, the shrine has attracted attention as a spiritual spot that brings good luck in marriage, attracting many female worshippers.
The approach leading to the main shrine with lush subtropical vegetation
After visiting the main shrine, do not forget to visit Motomiya. The path leading to the Motomiya Shrine is covered with subtropical plants, which are designated as a special natural treasure by the Japanese government, making it seem as if you have wandered into a jungle. As you continue on your way, you will gradually approach the vermilion shrine pavilion.
It is also an old custom to make a wish by tying a string called "koyori" (twisted paper) to the pair of birouju trees next to the main shrine. The pink string is for a good marriage and marital bliss, purple for a sound mind and body, green for business success, yellow for prosperous business, and white for the fulfillment of other desires. Tie a piece of koyori that matches your wish. The koyori should be tied in a knot so that the wish will not come undone. Another unique ritual is the "Amano -Hirakanage," or the throwing of the vessel from the heavens.
It is said that if you throw an earthenware plate called "'Hiraka" into the rock enclosure and successfully enter it, your wish will come true, and if the "Hiraka" cracks, it will ward off evil.
The beauty of nature created by the eternal years Walk the "Devil's Washboard"
Another impressive sight on Aoshima is a row of straight rocks arranged in a regular pattern.
These are called "devil's washboard," a geological formation unique to Miyazaki, where rocks that were once below the sea surface have emerged above the water due to geological changes in ancient times, and have been eroded by waves and sea water into their present shape. When the tide recedes, it is possible to walk on the rocks.

Japan's leading surf spot Experience the best waves at Kisakihama and Aoshima Beach
Miyazaki City is one of the leading surf spots in Japan, hosting the ISA World Surfing Games in September 2019. Many surfers enjoy good quality waves here year-round, and local surfers hit the water from around dawn until around 9 am. in search of offshore waves where the wind blows from the land to to sea. There are also facilities nearby that rent surfboards and offer surfing schools, creating an environment that can be enjoyed by beginners and advanced surfers alike.

Forest bathing in "Kaeda Valley" while listening to the murmuring of the river
Once you have had your fill of the ocean, it is time to visit a lush green valley. "Kaeda Valley" stretches about 8 km along the upper reaches of the Kaeda River, which flows from the Boroishiyama mountain range. It is only a 15-minute drive from Kisakihama to the "Maruno parking lot", the entrance to the valley, and you will be surprised at how close the ocean and the mountains are.
The emerald-green surface of the river is so beautiful that one feels as if he or she could be sucked in. There are many sights to see, such as the oddly shaped stones and rocks created by water erosion, and you will never get tired of strolling along the river. A stroll while listening to the sound of the river has an outstanding healing effect.
It is 9.4 km from the "Maruno Parking Lot" at the entrance to the valley to the Tsubakiyama Campground at the end of the trail. The "Hirogawara Resting Area" is about 2.4 km from the parking lot, and a round trip to this section of the trail is enough to enjoy the beauty of the valley. It takes about 45 minutes one way.

Day2
The first day spent visiting Aoshima Shrine and enjoying trekking in the Kaeda Valley. On the second day, enjoy the nature of the Aoshima area even more aggressively. In the morning, climb Boroishiyama, which is a low mountain but offers plenty of adventure. In the afternoon, experience the river SUP, slowly moving along the Kaeda River.
Extraordinary scenery created by strange stones and unusually-shaped rocks! Try mountain climbing at Boroishiyama
In the morning of the second day, climb Boroishiyama, which has a natural evergreen forest and was designated as a national natural monument in 1969. At an altitude of 509m, Boroishiyama is easy to climb even for beginners, but there are many rocky areas, and there are also adventure elements such as using ropes to climb up, which doubles the fun!
On the other hand, there are various routes, and there is a danger of losing your way without knowing it, so be sure to prepare well in advance. First, download a map app dedicated to climbing and check the route. It is better to wear shoes and clothes that are suitable for mountain climbing. Also, don't forget to wear gloves as you will put your hands on rocks and ropes and there are many steep slopes.
Dynamic scenery that appears one after another
This is the route from the "Kotani Trailhead" to the "2nd Observatory", and the first highlight is the huge "Tengu Iwa". When you zoom in on the rock, you notice that it has a rock shape similar to the "Devil's Washboard" seen in "Aoshima". You will be surprised to hear that this Boroishiyama was formed from the ocean floor a long time ago.
After passing Tengu Iwa, the trail becomes steep, but there is still much to see. Behind Tengu Iwa, a space surrounded by rocks more than 20 meters high called "Karaike" appears. The rocks stand in a straight line, and visitors feel as if they have wandered into an ancient ruin, even though they know that the scenery was created by nature.
Pass through the "Zo-no-hakaba (Elephant’s graveyard)" to the observation deck with a great view.
One of the most mystical spots is the "Elephant’s graveyard". Surrounded by huge rocks, it is a dramatic space where voices reverberate. It's a wonder because the patterns nature has carved into the large boulders appear to be those of a number of elephants! There is an anecdote that elephants instinctively leave their herds when they realize they are about to die, and this serene place perfectly matches the image of an "Elephant graveyard" of your imagination.
The “2nd Observatory”,the goal point this time, has a good view and you can see the city of Miyazaki and the mountains in the distance. The round trip from the Kotani trailhead to the "2nd Observatory" takes about two hours. There are some steep sections along the way, but the level of difficulty can be overcome if you proceed calmly step by step.
What does Mr. Nakano, a lover of Kyushu's mountains, think of Miyazaki City's natural attractions?
Since this is our first time climbing this mountain, we asked Mr. Shogo Nakano, who runs the outdoor shop PORTAL in Miyazaki City and guides on the mountains of Miyazaki, including Boroishiyama, to accompany us. Hiring a guide from a local mountain expert is also a smart way to enjoy mountain climbing safely.
"Miyazaki City is a wonderful place because the mountains and the sea are within close proximity, and there is a wide range of activities that people can experience. The mild climate keeps the trees green all year round, and the beautiful scenery can be seen even in winter, which is also a big attraction," said Mr. Nakano.

River SUP experience on the gentle flowing "Kaeda River"
After enjoying mountain climbing to the fullest, visitors can take a break and try a waterside activity. At MIYAZAKI SUP RETREAT (inside Miyazaki Beach Club), a river SUP experience is available along the Kaeda River. From the reception area, you can walk right to the river surface from under the bridge. The Kaeda River is shallow and the current is gentle, making it safe for beginners and children. Instructors will guide you carefully, so even first-time river SUPers should be able to enjoy themselves.
The facility is located near the mouth of the Kaeda River, and a short paddle forward will take you to the ocean. Conversely, if you paddle upstream toward the mountains, you will find a mountainous, nature-rich landscape lush with trees and reeds. River SUP tours are increasing all over Japan, but tours that are this close to the ocean and mountains are rare!
In addition, there are also sections that pass under railroad bridges, and depending on the time of day, you may be able to watch a local train pass by from the top of a board.

Chill time while soaking in the natural private hot spring "Honoka no Yu"
"Honoka-no-yu" is a fully private one-day hot spring facility located about 10 minutes by car from Miyazaki Prefectual Comprehensive Sports Park. It features "sulfur spring" water, which can be expected to promote blood circulation by bathing in it. The milky-white water, which is characterized by its rich and mild texture, is also expected to smooth the skin and is called "hot water for beautiful skin".
Rules and etiquette are written in English, so first-time visitors to the baths can feel at ease. Furthermore, the private baths allow tourists who are not accustomed to public baths to bathe without hesitation. Another key point is that the temperature can be freely adjuste

Enjoy ocean, mountain, and river activities all at once! Check out the video guide on how to enjoy "Aoshima" in Miyazaki City!
The video conveys the charm of the “Aoshima” area with a powerful voice and a sense of realism.
Conclusion
The "Aoshima" area has beautiful seascapes, mountain landscapes, and river landscapes, each of which is compactly integrated into a single area. In the evening, we recommend moving to Nishitachi, an entertainment district 30 minutes away by car, to enjoy Miyazaki's local cuisine. "Nishitachi" is a lively town full of "humanity" that is diagonally opposite to the nature of Aoshima where we have spent so far. By experiencing the various aspects of Miyazaki, you will discover the city's profound charms.
