Located in the northwestern part of Tochigi, Nikko City is famous for the UNESCO World Heritage–listed “Shrines and Temples of Nikko,” which includes Nikko Toshogu Shrine, and for the majestic natural scenery of Oku-Nikko.
This article introduces a 2-day itinerary that allows you to fully enjoy both cultural and natural highlights. Since it can be done entirely by public transportation, even those who do not drive can travel with ease.

DAY 1: Focus on the UNESCO World Heritage “Shrines and Temples of Nikko”

On the first day, the main destinations are Nikko Toshogu Shrine, Nikko Futarasan Shrine, and Rinnoji Temple—three of the cultural properties that make up the “Shrines and Temples of Nikko.” You’ll also visit other popular tourist spots in Nikko and Oku-Nikko.

9:00am Start at Tobu Nikko Station

Your journey begins at Tobu Nikko Station, the gateway to Nikko.
It’s about a two-hour ride by Limited Express Spacia from Tobu Asakusa Station in Tokyo.
