Nagai Sake Brewery
Mt. Hotaka、Standing Over Kawaba Village in Gunma. A Brewery Producing Fine Sakes that De-liver the Pure Taste of Mt. Hotaka’s Snow-Melted Waters.
Enamored by the spring waters and lush nature of Kawaba Village (Gunma Prefecture), the founder established Nagai Sake Brewery in 1886. He aimed to create a sake that embodied the same beauty of nature. This led to the release of the MIZUBASHO and TANIGAWADAKE brands, two sake lines that celebrate the beauty of their namesakes.
Later on, after 10 years of planning and countless attempts, Nagai Sake Brewery successfully introduced the in-bottle secondary sake fermentation method in 2008, a process which is said to derive the full possibilities of rice. This led to the birth of their pure, sparkling sake, MIZUBASHO PURE. 2014 saw the release of Nagai Style, a sake line to pair with foods. With these new lines, the Nagai Sake’s are now divided into four categories, the “Sparkling Sake” (MIZUBASHO PURE), the original brand “Still Sake” (MIZUBASHO and TANIGAWADAKE), “Vintage Sake” and “Dessert Sake”. These are styled as sakes to pair with food, in a variety of course options to enjoy.
In 2020, MIZUBASHO PURE won the platinum award, Medaille de platine, for the Sparkling Sake division of Kura Master, while Mizubasho Junmai Daiginjo Premium won gold at the first Japanese Sake division Concours Mondail des Vins Féminalise, setting the stage for Japanese sake to see new acclaim on a global scale.
While bottling the essence of heart, history, culture, and proud nature borne in Kawaba Village, Nagai Sake Brewery carries on the rich heritage of Japanese culture and its sake. You can taste the same spirit for yourself at Koshinkan, the onsite direct sales shop during your next stop to the brewery.
