Mishaka Pond
This pond is famous as a painting by Kaii Higashiyama, Japanese Nihonga style painter, and shows beautiful seasonal scenes on the surface of the mirror-like water.
The pond is at an altitude of 1500m in the mountain and its name originally came from Shinto ceremony in which deer is given as an offering.
The pond was originally built as an agricultural irrigation pond in the early time of the Showa era, and cold water from Mt.Yatsugatake is heated by sunshine in the pond and was used for culturing rice. Water in the pond is still used by farmers at the foot of the mountain, Sasahara area, and the people in Sasahara have maintained the area around the pond. Fish can’t survive in the pond because of the strong acidity of the water, and is the reason for the high transparency of the pond.
Inverted scenery of the mountains iis reflected on the clear surface of the water and makes a fantastic image. The scenery has inspired many people and is well known as a motif of famous painting “Vibrant Green” by Kaii Higashiyama who is one of the top painters in Japan.
Woods of Japanese Larch surrounding the pond change their colors season by season such as fresh green in spring, deep green in summer, golden yellow leaves in autumn, and pure white snow and ice in winter.
You might want to visit this spot to view again and again its various faces of each hour in a day. *No entry inside the embankment because this local area is for farming only.
