It is a bowl-shaped valley eroded by glaciers 20,000 years ago, stretching from Komagane City to Miyata Village in Nagano Prefecture and directly below Mt. Hokendake in the Central Alps. Many climbers and tourists from all over Japan visit the area to enjoy the dynamic changes in scenery from season to season and the magnificent views.
From Komagane Kogen plateau to "Senjojiki" station, local bus and Komagatake ropeway can be reached. A promenade is maintained within Senjojiki Karl, and a 40-minute tour around the area is possible.
It is also known as a treasure trove of alpine flora, and in summer, a variety of plants bloom all over the rocky surface of the alpine zone at elevations of over 2,500 meters. About 150 species of alpine plants, including the Trollius japonicus, and the Veratrum stamineum, which are said to bloom only once every few years, are in full bloom from mid-July to early August.
This is a spot where you can enjoy the charm of the area all year round. In spring, you can enjoy snowshoeing and skiing. In fall, you can admire the colorful autumn leaves, and in winter, you can enjoy the pure white winter scenery and star-filled sky.
