Niihama Taiko Festival is held in Niihama City for 4 days from October 15 through the 18. It is counted as one of Shikoku’s Three Great Festivals along with Awa Dance in Tokushima and Yosakoi Festival in Kochi.
Niihama Taiko Festival celebrates a bounty of fall crops and fishing. 150 boisterous men hoist a float called Taiko-dai and march around the city. They shout “Chosajah,” “Sorya, sorya,” as huge drum floats move along. The dynamic event is rightly called “Men’s Festival.”
The large drum float is 5.5m-tall and weighs 3 tons. Each district puts unique decoration and it is fun to see. See the three layered banners on the float with 3-D embroideries, which is the face of each district.
