Itoshima
This is a hot resort area located only 30 minutes from downtown Fukuoka. Enjoy the stunning scenery and delicacies from the mountains and the sea!
Itoshima, a 30-minute drive from Fukuoka Airport and Hakata Station, is a resort area loved by Fukuoka citizens. Driving along the coast, known as a surfing spot, is a popular route, and there are many fashionable restaurants and stores along the route.
The first thing we recommend to first-time visitors to Itoshima is a drive along Prefectural Road 54. After passing the Fukuoka City Umizuri Park, look for a large sign for Zauo Itoshima Honten, a seafood restaurant. A palm tree swing is popular for its Instagram-worthy appearance on the beach in front of this restaurant.
The next destination is "Meoto Iwa” (Sacred Wedded Rocks). Sakurai Futamigaura, home to the local Sakurai Shrine, is a rare sanctuary with a torii gate in the sea. Beyond the torii gate is "Meoto-iwa," a pair of rocks connected by a large sacred rope. Futamigaura is also known for its beautiful sunsets, and during the summer solstice, the sun can be seen setting between the two rocks. There are also many trendy cafes and restaurants in the area.
Itoshima is also known for its delicious mountains and seafood. You will find many signs along the roadside selling the produce directly from the production areas, so be sure to pick up some of Itoshima's delicacies as souvenirs to take home.
