Katsurahama on Kurahashi-jima was designated as a port of call for the route during the time of the envoy to Tang China (around 630-894). Hiyama that rises in the center of the island, which flourished as a key point for maritime transportation, is said to have been named after the fire that was lit at its summit and served as a lighthouse.

It takes about an hour by bus from JR Kure Station to the trailhead. From there, there is a well maintained trail to the top of the mountain, and you can enjoy an easy hike of about 60 minutes one way. From the large rock at the top of the mountain, you can enjoy an unobstructed 360-degree panoramic view of “TATOUBI” (beautiful various islands' landscape) of the Seto Inland Sea, overlooking as far as Shikoku Island! It is also a very popular spot for the spectacular view.
