Iwaso
A ryokan, established in 1854, that has witnessed the history of Miyajima since the end of the Edo period.
Located in the Momijidani Park, the historic ryokan Iwaso is surrounded by nature and set at the foot of Misen Mountain. In addition to "Hanare" rooms, one-room, one-story buildings built between the Taisho and Showa eras, there is also a main building and an annex, from which guests can choose according to their preferences.
The "Hanare" rooms, which are all individual buildings, are for special guests such as members of the Imperial family, businessmen, and intellectuals. The main building, built in the early Showa era (early 20th century), has a different decor for each room, and the sound of the Momiji River welcomes guests. The five-story reinforced concrete annex has views of both the Momijidani Valley and the Seto Inland Sea, depending on the room.
There is also a hot spring (rare in Miyajima) and when in the open-air bath, you may even spot deer strolling through the forest. The running stream offers soothing sounds, and the primeval forest is beautifully illuminated at night.
Notables who have stayed at this historic ryokan include the Showa Emperor, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako (as a prince and princess), and other members of the Imperial Family, as well as Nagakoto Asano, the former lord of the Hiroshima domain, Mokichi Saito, Eiji Yoshikawa, Isoroku Yamamoto, Nobusuke Kishi, Shotaro Ikenami, Chiyo Uno, Junichiro Koizumi, and many other distinguished guests.
