Asahi Beer Oyamazaki Villa Museum of Art
A museum housed in an elegant mansion.
The museum is based on a villa built by Shotaro Kaga, an Osaka businessman who participated in the founding of Nikka Whiskey with Masataka Taketsuru. It is located at the foot of Mt. Tennozan, which separates Kyoto and Osaka and was the scene of the decisive "Battle of Yamazaki".
Kaga, who had studied abroad in Europe, completed the villa, which was influenced by the English Tudor Gothic style, around 1932, and it became a beloved villa for the local community.
Asahi Beer, of which Tamesaburo Yamamoto was the first president, had a close relationship with Kaga and later came to own the villa, and decided to develop it into an art museum, exhibiting mainly the collection of Tamesaburo Yamamoto, who also understood the folk art movement.
In addition to the main building built by Kaga, a separate building named "Underground Jewelry Box annex" and "Dream Box annex," designed by Tadao Ando, was added to house approximately 1,000 works, including ceramics by Kanjiro Kawai, Shoji Hamada, Bernard Leach and other artists of the folk art movement, and a series of "Water Lilies" by the French Impressionist painter Claude Monet.
