Nagasaki Kameyama Shachu Memorial Museum
The precise recreation of Kameyama Shachu, Japan's first trading company formed by Sakamoto Ryoma and others, now displaying the interesting and unique items.
In 1865, Ryoma Sakamoto formed Japan's first trading company, Kameyama Shachu, with the support of the Satsuma clan and the Nagasaki merchant Kozone. "Kameyama Shachu" is named after "Kameyama," the location where Ryoma and his associates were based, and "Shachu," meaning "colleagues" or "association." They mainly managed shipping and trading.
The memorial museum is located on the site of its former location, and the dilapidated remains have been renovated and restored and appear much like the original building. The museum was opened to the public in 2009, and a stone monument with "Ruins of Kameyama Shachu” stands at the entrance.
The layout of the room has been restored in the original manner, including the pillar in the tatami room where Ryoma is said to have sat leaning against it. There is a mezzanine floor above the earthen floor and a three-tatami mat room, which is said to be the room where Ryoma hid in case of an emergency. The museum exhibits items related to Ryoma, such as his favorite boots, a pistol, replicas of letters, a Chinese lute, and photos of the Kameyama Shachu samurai.
Kameyama Ware is also displayed, having been produced from 1807. This white porcelain industry with Chinese gosu glaze closed down around 1865, and it is said that Kameyama Shachu was established after the houses related to Kameyama Ware.
