Kunimigaoka Hill
An iconic spot to witness the sea of clouds, offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, and rooted in Japanese mythology.
Located in Takachiho Town, Miyazaki Prefecture, which frequently appears in Japanese mythology, the Kunimigaoka Hill stands at an elevation of 513m and is known for its clear views in all directions. Legend has it that its name originates from the story of Taneiwatatsu Mikoto, the grandson of Emperor Jinmu, who stopped here to oversee Kyushu during his rule.
From the observation deck, one can see the Aso Five Peaks to the west, which due to their formation resemble the reclining figure of Buddha, thus referred to as "Aso's Reclining Buddha". Other panoramic views include the Aso outer rim to the west, the Takachiho Basin to the east, Mt. Sobo to the north, and Mt. Nijo to the south. Furthermore, Kunimigaoka Hill is renowned for its breathtaking "sea of clouds" spectacle. This phenomenon often occurs on clear, calm mornings from mid-September to late November, especially after a chilly night with a significant temperature drop. The sight of the mountains and the Takachiho Basin enveloped by clouds is truly magnificent.
The observation deck features a wooden swing for visitors to enjoy the views and a statue of Takeiwatatsu-no-mikoto that depicts a scene from Japanese mythology. A bus stop nearby makes it easily accessible for casual visits.
