Aoshima is a small island of 1.5km in circumference, which is connected with a 150m-long bridge to the main island. The whole island is Aoshima Shrine’s ground. As a holy island, no one was allowed to visit here. The whole premises are covered with areca trees and other sub-tropical plants in a very Miyazaki-like tropical scenery.
The historical shrine was built before AD 820, which is said to be the stage of the legend of Umisachihiko and Yamasachihiko. Yamasachihiko, who is Hikohohodemi no Mikoto, and his wife, Toyotamahime no Mikoto, are enshrined. A multitude from the prefecture and beyond visit this power spot for romance.
Go see the famous wave-shaped rocks “Devil's Washboard” which surround the island.
Those rocks and plants are designated as Japan’s natural monuments. Of more than 200 species, 27 are tropical or sub-tropical plants. The island is also designated as a national special natural monument of tropical and sub-tropical plants’ habitat.
You can enjoy marine activities such as sea kayak or stand-up paddleboard at the beach, and the neighborhood has lots of tour spots. Take a whole day and relax here.
