Tsuno Winery
The world-renowned winemaker.
Located on a hill overlooking the Hyuga-nada Sea, this winery’s wine was selected as one of the “100 Most Exciting Wines” in the internationally renowned book “Wine Report” in 2004. They also won the Gold Award and the title of “Best Wine From Japan” at the Hong Kong International Wine & Spirit Competition 2021, Asia’s largest wine competition. Their wine is well-known all over the world.
This area has lots of rain and was not thought to be suitable for grape cultivation, but they started growing grapes right after WWII ended. They installed waterproof film to protect the trees from the rain and improved the method of tree training. Additionally, taking advantage of the mild climate with short winters and early spring, they established the area as a summer grape producing district, and have been supplying “Osuzu grapes” all over Japan.
There are winery tours through the vineyards and breweries led by the winemakers themselves. Tours last about an hour, and reservations are required (at a cost). At the cafe, tastings (for a fee) and light meals are also available. The “Harvest Festival” is held in October to celebrate the release of new wines.
