Hyogo Park of the Oriental White Stork
The only park in Japan where you can see the majestic Oriental Stork, a nationally protected species.
The Oriental Stork, a nationally protected species, was said to have gone extinct in the Tajima province circa 1970. However, they have slowly increased in number after artificial breeding and feeding with the help of Russia and China. There are over 250 wild Oriental storks in Japan, after recent successes in re-introducing them to the wild.
Established in 1999, the Hyogo Park of the Oriental White Stork aims to protect, breed, and re-introduce Oriental storks in the wild. Walking routes in the park allow viewers to see bred storks up close. Some wild Oriental storks might come flying by, if you are lucky.
The nearby Toyooka Municipal Museum of the Oriental White Stork lets viewers learn more about the species’ behavior, and the history involving their reintroduction to the wild. Visitors may also learn about the species’ ecosystem and habitat, where various events help them learn more about living in unity with the birds.
