Tamba Sasayama City Historical Museum
This museum, housed in a former courthouse building, provides visitors with an insight into the history and culture of Tamba Sasayama.
Meiji Era It is a valuable example of a typical wooden government building from the Meiji era (1868-1912). It is designated as a cultural asset of the city, making it worth a visit just to see the building. Just north of the ruins of Sasayama Castle, this museum stands out in the central area where many restaurants and souvenir stores line the streets. The building was built in 1891 as the Sasayama District Court and remained in use until 1981, making it one of the oldest wooden courthouses in Japan.
The museum exhibits a large number of armors, paintings, ceramics, and other artifacts from the castle town of Sasayama. Among them, Tamba pottery, which has a history of more than 800 years and is one of the six oldest kilns in Japan, is on display, along with valuable artifacts from its early days that were excavated during excavation surveys. Visitors can also see Ojiyama-yaki Pottery, a mysterious type of pottery that developed under the patronage of the Edo period but was discontinued for more than 100 years until it was revived in 1988.
Although the building has been renovated into an art museum, only the old courtroom has been preserved and opened to the public as it was in those days. The "Judge Experience Corner," where visitors can dress up in Meiji-era judge's costumes and have their pictures taken, is also famous.
