This purely Japanese-style teahouse is located in a corner of Naramachi (the traditional district of Nara). The 200-year-old building is a prefectural registered cultural property that was the former townhouse of the wealthy local Matsuyama merchant family. Upon entering, you will encounter a traditional Japanese-style room with tatami mats. You will feel very relaxed, just by sitting down.

The signature dish of Sabo Nonnon is tea rice porridge, a local Nara dish that has been enjoyed for over 1,300 years. Here, you should order this popular porridge set without any hesitation. To go along with the porridge, the Hojicha (roasted green tea) or azukicha (red bean tea) are served together . Savor a fine dining time with the tea of your choice.

The tea rice porridge is served in a hot iron pot. Accompanying side dishes include kiriboshi-daikon (dried strips of radish), Nara pickles, pickled plums, Japanese butterbur dish, and takana (mustard greens), as well as Noppe soup, a local specialty. The taste of the rice porridge is all the better when sprinkled to your preference with Yamato-tea powder and salt. After the tea rice porridge, have a dessert of warabimochi rice cakes and Yamato-tea.
