From Shari machi through Utoro, Hokkaido, there is a long straight road, which looks as if it stretches into heaven. Thus, named “Road to the Sky.”

Stop by at observation spots “Start Chiten (Starting Point)” or “Namonaki Tenbodai (Nameless Observatory)” near the highest point of the road. You can view fields, windbreak groves, the Sea of Okhotsk and the road leading to the horizon. In early summer, enjoy fresh green, fall foliage in autumn, snowscape in winter and different faces of Hokkaido in four seasons.

The recommended time to visit is evening. In each season, the sun sets at different locations. The best season is between late September and early October. The sun sets right at the center of the Road to the Sky.
