Higashi-tenno Okazaki Shrine
Lovingly referred to as the "Rabbit Shrine", this ancient temple is known for prayers of safe childbirth and matchmaking.
In the 13th year of the Enryaku era (794), when Emperor Kanmu relocated the capital from Nagaoka-kyo to Heian-kyo, this shrine was one of the four erected at each corner of the capital to protect the royal city. Due to its location in the direction of the rising sun (east, direction of the rabbit in the Chinese zodiac), it was named "Higashi-tenno" (Eastern Heavenly King).
The deities worshiped here are Susanoo-no-Mikoto and Kushinadahime-no-Mikoto, along with their eight children - three sons and five daughters. These deities, known for bestowing many children, are recognized as gods of fertility. Moreover, the shrine and surrounding area have been habitats for wild rabbits since ancient times. These rabbits, believed to be the messengers of the deities, are also symbols of fertility. Hence, the shrine attracts devout worshipers as the god of safe childbirth, fertility, and matchmaking.
Within the shrine grounds, numerous rabbit motifs can be found. Instead of the traditional guardian lions, there are "Koma-rabbits" in front of the worship hall. There's also the "Inviting Rabbit" for good luck and the "Child-Giving Rabbit" at the water pavilion. It's believed that pouring water on and rubbing the belly of this rabbit statue brings fertility and safe childbirth. Don't miss out on the adorable round-shaped rabbit fortune slips!
