Chiran Samurai Residence Garden

Stroll through seven nationally designated scenic gardens, experiencing their serene beauty and historical charm.

Last update :

During the Edo period, the Satsuma Domain implemented a unique “Gaitō System”, which required samurai to be dispersed across the territory rather than concentrated in a single castle town. This led to the creation of Bukeyashiki (samurai residential districts) called "Fumoto", one of which was Chiran. The Chiran Samurai Residence Garden, believed to have been established around 270 years ago, still preserve their historical atmosphere, offering visitors a glimpse into the past.

The main street, lined with stone walls and hedges, winds through the district, creating a charming scene often referred to as "Satsuma’s Little Kyoto". Along this street, visitors can explore seven nationally designated scenic gardens, all open to the public for viewing.
Six of these gardens follow the Karesansui (dry landscape) style, often incorporating Mount Hahagatake, located in the northeast, as shakkei (borrowed scenery). The Mori Shigemitsu Garden, located at the eastern end of the district, is the only pond-style garden, making it a unique highlight.

Chiran’s historical connection with the Ryukyu Kingdom, due to its role as a trade hub for the Satsuma Domain, has also left traces of Ryukyuan cultural influence in the area.
For a deeper experience, visitors can book a volunteer guide at least one week in advance.
