Yoshida Kaya

Known for its colorful and versatile cloths, this historic shop has been crafting high-quality kaya (mosquito netting) products for generations.

Last update :

Nara Prefecture once produced about 70% of all mosquito netting in Japan, and it was home to over 100 kaya (mosquito net) shops in the Naramachi area alone. Today, only one remains: Yoshida Kaya, a shop that has carried on this tradition since its founding in 1921 (Taisho 10). Now run by third-generation owner Katsutoshi Yoshida, the shop continues to preserve and promote Nara’s unique kaya culture with great care.

All products are made using traditional kaya fabrics, such as linen and rayon. While mosquito nets are still available, the shop also offers a variety of lifestyle items including noren (curtains), scarves, placemats, and dishcloths.

The shop’s most iconic item is the Naramachi Fukin—a multi-purpose dishcloth that has made the Yoshida name known across Japan. With nearly 20 colors to choose from and an affordable price point, it’s a favorite among customers who often buy them in bulk.
Highly absorbent, lint-free, and easy to clean with just a rinse in water, these cloths make practical and stylish souvenirs from Nara.
