Tokyo Koenji Awa-Odori

The regular summer event that captures more than 1 million spectators.

Last update :

It began as “Koen-ji Temple’s Baka Odori (Stupid Dance).” in 1957. Today, more than 1 million visitors come to see Tokyo Koenji Awa Odori. This is the summer staple for local people and the 2nd largest event after Tokushima of all the Awa Odori hosted in Japan.

Tokyo Koenji Awa Odori is held on Saturday and Sunday in the last week of August. At eight dance locations such as near the train station or shopping street, participating Ren (groups) go around the chosen locations, while dancing for the shamisen banjos and drums and cheers of “Yatto Sah! yat, yat!” Each group has their own special attire and it is exciting to watch them dance.

During the daytime on those days, a dance performance (with a fee) is held at a theater, Za Koenji. The arrangement is different from the outdoor Nagasi Odori (Flowing Dance) and it is fun to watch.

After the theater performance, immerse yourself in the feverish outdoor dance through the town of Koenji Temple.
