Himeji Castle Nishi-Oyashiki-ato Garden KOKO-EN

On the southwest side of Himeji Castle, a World Heritage Site, Koko-en is a strolling-style garden around ponds and consists of nine different themed gardens, including the Garden of the Lord’s Residence, on a vast site of approx. 3,300 m2. The Edo period atmosphere draws visitors, and it’s also known as a popular filming location for movies and TV shows, including samurai dramas.

The seasonal scenery is another attraction of this beautiful garden. The garden changes color throughout the year: a pink carpet of cherry blossoms in spring; fresh greenery in summer; fiery colors of autumn foliage in autumn; and pure white snow in winter. There are light-up events at night during the “Yozakura-kai” (cherry blossom night viewing) in spring, the “Kangetsu-kai” (full-moon viewing) and the “Momiji-kai” (autumn foliage night viewing) in fall to enjoy its mysterious scenery.

There are some facilities where visitors can experience Japanese culture, such as a sukiya-zukuri style tea ceremony house, “Souju-an” (additional charge for tea and sweets, held about 6 times a day), and a restaurant, “Kassui-ken,” where customers can enjoy meals while admiring the Garden of the Lord’s Residence.
