Hakone Gindofu

In front of Hakone Tozan Railway’s Gora Station, there is an established tofu shop which provides tofu for breakfast for many hotels and inns in Hakone. On holidays, a waiting line forms at this local favorite store.

They wake up at 4:30 each morning to make the famous Shakuri Tofu. This is freshly made tofu before the water is drained and hasn’t been formed into blocks yet. As an order comes, they shakuri (scoop) it out, thus the name Shakuri tofu. The soft tofu just solidified smooth and fis still warm. Try just the silky tofu without anything to savor the soybeans' sweetness and flavor, then with the soy sauce provided at the store. As time goes, the soy beans’ good flavor will be lost and this is not for take-out.

There are Momen / Kinu tofu, fried / raw soybean curds for take-out. Products may be sold out in the morning and then the store can often be closed.
