Ryugetsu Sapporo
Hokkaido’s famous dessert for your soothing time, which is in the shape of firewood used in the pioneer days.
In 1947, the Japanese/western sweets maker, Ryugetsu, was established in Obihiro, Tokachi District. Their leading product is Sanporoku. Even though they were making only ice candies in the beginning, the taste became a sensation and they began producing western and Japanese/western sweets. Sanporoku is one of them. Not only the taste but also the originality and the reflection of Hokkaido’s history were recognized and Sanporoku received a Gold Award in the acclaimed sweets contest, the 27th Monde Selection in 1988.
During Hokkaido’s pioneer days, trees were cleared in many parts to make open land. These trees were cut into a standard size of Sanpo, Rokusun (about 18cm), which was used as the name in hopes to create a comfortable family time like the fire in the open hearth would.
Sanporoku uses baumkuchen as the tree trunk and white and milk chocolate as the bark. The moist cake is covered with two-kinds of chocolate in the original technology. The appearance of firewood and tender sweetness soothe not only tourists but also local shoppers in their tea time.
