Misokatsu Kanou

The famous restaurant where Nagoya's specialty "Miso Katsudon" originated.

Last update :

Founded in 1949, this long-established restaurant is known as the originator of Miso Katsudon. Originally a fine dining establishment, it started offering Miso Katsudon as a lunch-only option. The dish quickly gained popularity, especially among movie stars who visited for stage greetings at a nearby cinema.

The lifeblood of the restaurant is its miso sauce, which has been handed down and added to over generations, giving it a rich flavor. Freshly fried katsu is immersed in this miso and simmered to allow the flavors to penetrate deeply. The miso is robust with a restrained sweetness, pairing excellently with plain white rice.

A unique feature is the addition of an egg on top. Starting with the flavors as is and then breaking the egg partway through changes the taste to a milder miso flavor, preventing it from becoming monotonous. Additional toppings like green onions or extra egg are also available.

Another popular dish is the "Miso Ebi Don," which includes two fried prawn cutlets dressed in miso sauce atop the rice, reminiscent of the golden shachihoko on Nagoya Castle's roof—a picturesque dish sure to delight.
