Nago City Hall

While performing administrative functions as Nago City Hall, it is a hidden tourist spot known for its famous architecture. Looking like an ancient ruin, you may not recognize it as a city hall at first glance. It is also known as an "energy-saving government building" because of its distinctive design that takes advantage of Okinawa's climate by allowing sea breezes to cool the building. The terraces on each floor are planted with banyan trees, bougainvillea, and other trees, and the building is filled with elements that truly symbolize Okinawa.

Since its creation in 1981, designed by Tokyo-based Zo Design Group, the building has attracted attention for its unusual fortress-like structure. Originally, after Okinawa was returned to Japan, Nago City began planning the construction of a new city hall, and public proposals were solicited for a design to build a new city hall for the citizens of Nago.

The building received the Architectural Institute of Japan Award for its architectural style and structure, which did not look like a city hall, and also won the Architectural Institute of Japan Award for Best Work. Each floor has a terrace that can be used by citizens at any time for recreation and relaxation.
