There are 2129 shrines which enshrines the grand god of Sumiyoshi. This shrine is said to be the very first of them. The god housed here is written in the Record of Ancient Matters. As the Shikinai Myojin-taisha and the first shrine in the Chikuzen Region, it has 1800 years of history. This is the god of voyage and stars that came out of the ocean, who purifies soul and body and grants other blessings. He has been revered in Sumo wrestling. In fall, before the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament, Japan Sumo Association hosts a ceremony where the previous champion dedicates the performance on the wrestling ring.
On the vast 6.6 acre grounds, rare buildings and holy trees abound. The Sumiyoshi Style is said to be the oldest shrine architecture in history, and the main building is designated as a national important cultural property. The mystic holy tree, Ichiyamatsu pine, is said to bless you with posterity and long life. Ebisu God statue is believed to impart a blessing depending on which part of the statue you touch. Try touching it or the Ancient Sumo Wrestler statue, which is to strengthen you when you touch its hand. Only an 8-minute-walk from Hakata Station, Sumiyoshi Shrine is in the middle of the city, yet it stands quietly in the forest, offering a peaceful place to visitors.
Onda Festival in spring where people pray for a good harvest, Nagoshi Festival in summer to cleanse the impurity of soul and body, Rei Festival in October, and other festivals and events are held throughout the year.
