Gakushi-kaikan
A classic structure allows you to experience history.
A retro-modern design pavilion located in Kanda, Tokyo. It was constructed as a meeting ground for the “Gakushi-kai”, a group of alumni from the former imperial university. It is currently open to the public. The complex is used as a party hall, wedding hall, hotel, restaurant, and bar.
The pavilion completed construction in 1928, and uses iron reinforced concrete useful against earthquakes and fires, unique for its time. As a members only club, it was used in many ways throughout its long history. It used to be the headquarters for the Tokyo Police Headquarters. After the war, it was used as a dorm for the allies and its generals. In 2003, it was designated a national tangible cultural asset.
The building was constructed by architect Teitaro Takahashi, who designed Nihonbashi Takashimaya and the Imperial Hotel (new pavilion). The half-spherical arch entrance and differently shaped windows has a personality-filled, modern design. It remains one of the most beloved landmarks of Kanda.
