Haneda Shrine
The historic shrine said to keep travelers safe.
This ancient shrine is said to have been built almost 800 years ago. The current Haneda Airport is in their parish, and is worshiped especially by the airline industry and their workers who come to make a wish of safe travels throughout the year. Visitors love to write their wishes on the wooden plaque with an airplane flying over the shrine gate.
The gods enshrined here are Susanoo no Mikoto and Inadahime no Mikoto. Since the couple deities are here, many visitors come to make a wish in romance or gambling as well.
Take a look at Haneda Fuji, a 5m-tall hill near the main hall. Just as the name suggests, the mound was created in the likeness of Mt. Fuji with Fuji’s volcanic rocks in early Meiji Period, so pilgrims do not have to climb Mt. Fuji to make a wish. With Daikoku statue and Haneda Fuji guardian dogs enshrined, the hill is designated as Ota District’s cultural asset.
The annual summer ritual, Haneda Festival, is held in the last week of July. More than 3,000 men hoist the float. Since Haneda is a fishing town, the float is likened to a boat and the men carry it in the special Yokota style. It is a must-see.
