Last update :

Desiring to transform Tokyo Station, which is the starting and ending point for Japan's railways, from just a transit point to a hub of culture, the Tokyo Station Gallery was born within the Marunouchi station building in 1988. Following renovations of the station in 2006, the gallery was temporarily closed. In 2012, it reopened in the northern dome of the Marunouchi station building, a structure designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, restored to its original appearance when it was first constructed.

Centered around modern art, the gallery hosts diverse exhibitions encompassing themes from contemporary art to architecture, design, and railways. The corridor on the second floor permanently displays models, dioramas, and photographic materials that introduce the history of the Tokyo Station Marunouchi building. Visitors can also closely appreciate valuable materials used during its original construction and the actual models for the ceiling reliefs.

Geographically and historically positioned at the heart of Japan, Tokyo Station has witnessed multiple eras of modern Japanese history. The gallery, with its brick-walled exhibition rooms that embody the station's history, exudes a unique presence as a museum.
