Japanese architectural aesthetics are famous worldwide, and this station really shows it off. The design blends glass and the surrounding scenery, and both the exterior and interior feel so modern. I couldn't help but admire the architect's skill when I visited.

Hitachi Station
Beautiful glass-walled station building with the Pacific Ocean filling the windows.
Hitachi Station on the Joban Line of JR East, facing the Pacific Ocean, is the central station of Hitachi City. The current station building, completed in 2011, is impressive with its beautiful all-glass structure. The design was supervised by Hitachi-born architect Ms.Kazuyo Sejima, winner of "The Pritzker Architecture Prize.", also known as the Nobel Prize in Architecture. It was awarded the Good Design Award in 2012 and "The Brunel Award "for Excellence in 2014, an international design competition specializing in railroads.
The observation event hall at the eastern end of the walkway overlooks the Pacific Ocean. The unobstructed, straight line of the horizon offers an outstanding ocean view that changes with the time of day, from sunrise in the morning to the blue ocean in the middle of the day.
The popular café on the deck also juts out from the walkway, which is open from 7:00 a.m.
The "Eki Piano" has been installed since 2019. Everyone is free to play and enjoy the ears of visitors.
