Togo Jinja
The shrine next to Harajuku’s Takeshita Street which enshrines Heihachiro Togo.
Heihachiro Togo worked as an admiral of the Japanese navy. This shrine honors the former navy general and is located close to Harajuku Station. Although it is in the middle of a city, the 7-acre grounds are rich in nature and quietness. It was built in 1940 with the requests and donations sent from all over Japan after the death of Togo.
It is known as the shrine of “winning luck” after Heihachiro Togo who led Japan to a victory in 1907. Many visit to obtain the “winning plates” and “winning charms.” “Winning plates” have the genuine calligraphy of Heihachiro Togo. Mr. and Mrs. Togo were a loving couple all their lives. Thus, besides winning, Togo is revered as a god of marital relationship.
The good luck charm and stamp booklet sold here come with Hello Kitty on them and are quite popular. These came out of Harajuku’s cute culture, where the shrine is located, and Japan’s traditional culture blended together. You can receive the red ink stamp in a special Hello Kitty design with a bow into your Booklet.
