Located along the Ayase River, which flows from Saitama to Tokyo, Horikiri Shobuen has been famous for Japanese irises (Hanashobu) since ancient times. The Horikiri area has long been recognized as a prime iris-viewing spot, even appearing in the works of Edo-period ukiyo-e artists such as Utagawa Hiroshige and Utagawa Toyokuni.
Spanning 7,700 square meters, the garden features approximately 6,000 iris plants from 200 different varieties, primarily Edo Hanashobu. Rare varieties like "Jūnihitoe," "Suibijin," and "Geshō Hagoromo" attract many enthusiasts. The peak bloom occurs in early June, coinciding with the Katsushika Iris Festival, held from early to mid-June. The festival features parades, street stalls, and bazaars, transforming the entire neighborhood into a lively celebration.

Beyond irises, the garden offers a year-round display of seasonal flowers, including plum blossoms, wisteria, winter cherry blossoms, and peonies. Visitors can also enjoy refreshments at "Seikantei," a casual tea corner inside the garden serving sweets, drinks, and light meals. For a more intimate gathering, the venue can be reserved in advance for private banquets.
