Kodaira City Fureai Sewerage Museum

A unique facility where you can actually enter real sewer pipes, making it a rare attraction nationwide.

Last update :

Established in 1990 to commemorate the achievement of 100% public sewer system coverage in Kodaira City, this facility offers an engaging introduction to the workings, roles, and history of sewage systems, including their development since the Edo period.
The highlight of the museum is the "Experience Room," located five floors underground, where visitors can enter actual sewer pipes that are 25 meters below ground. This rare opportunity allows you to see and smell the conditions of a functioning sewer system firsthand.

Additionally, the museum features large monitors where you can observe microorganisms that help purify dirty water, as well as displays of tools and photographs from old wells, making it an enjoyable learning experience for young children. There's also a section where you can watch a storytelling-like presentation about the history of sewage systems from the Edo period to the present. The museum offers free educational sessions for elementary school students once a month.
