Fudoin has such a peaceful vibe. It’s not very big, but the atmosphere is both solemn and relaxing. Just stepping inside makes you feel calm. The architecture is charmingly old-fashioned—perfect for a slow stroll and quietly soaking in the tranquility.

Fudoin is a temple whose principal object of worship is a hidden statue of Fudo Myoo, carved by Kobo Daishi (Kukai). The temple was founded in 907 by the high priest Jiko. In the main hall, along with Fudo Myoo, memorial tablets such as the image of Nichirin Daishi and the Hachiman Bodhisattva inscribed on a boat plank are enshrined and honored through daily rituals.
The temple also offers shukubo (temple lodging). Meals of shojin ryori (traditional Buddhist vegetarian cuisine) are served either in the former study hall (kyushoin) or in the kuri (temple kitchen). The kyushoin, built in the Azuchi-Momoyama period, is one of the oldest structures in Mount Koya and, like the kuri, is designated as a Cultural Property of Wakayama Prefecture.
The temple is also home to Buddhist art and a renowned dry landscape garden, Kissen-tei, created by the celebrated landscape architect Mirei Shigemori. With a variety of plants, the garden changes its expression with the seasons, offering beauty and tranquility throughout the year.
