Kamonji Goya is a historic mountain hut built in 1880 by Kamijo Kamonji, who was a guide for Walter Weston, known as the father of modern mountaineering in Japan. Located in Kamikochi, a base for North Alps mountaineering, the hut has been a beloved resting place for climbers and visitors. Currently, the fifth-generation owner, Mizuho Kamijo, continues the tradition, welcoming guests for both lodging and meals.

The iconic Irori room, built in the late Taisho era, is designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. The grilled Iwana (char) cooked over the irori's hearth is the hut's signature dish. Fresh Iwana are caught from a stream in front of the hut, skewered, and slowly grilled over the hearth's wood fire, resulting in an exquisite delicacy. Eating the Iwana whole, including the head, enhances its flavor.

Other specialties include Kamonji Soba topped with sweetened Iwana and "hone-zake," a drink made by steeping Iwana smoked for about three days in warmed sake. Enjoy a relaxing time in this historic mountain hut.
