Senjogahara Marshland

Enjoy hiking while admiring a variety of alpine plants.

Last update :

Located within Nikko National Park, Senjogahara Marshland is an expansive 400-hectare wetland. It was once a lake, but volcanic sediment gradually accumulated, allowing aquatic plants to take root, eventually forming a marshland under the region’s cool climate. The name "Senjogahara" (meaning "Battlefield Marsh") comes from a legend in which the deities of Mount Akagi and Mount Nantai transformed into a giant centipede and a great serpent, respectively, and fought over control of Lake Chuzenji.

A well-maintained nature trail encircles the marsh, creating a scenic hiking course that takes about two hours to complete. With minimal elevation changes, it is ideal for beginners and families with small children to enjoy a relaxing trek.

Senjogahara is a haven for alpine plants, boasting a mix of high, low, and intermediate wetlands. No matter the season, visitors can appreciate the breathtaking landscapes shaped by Oku-Nikko’s rich natural environment. The best times to visit are June to July, when cotton grass and azaleas paint the marsh in vibrant hues, and autumn, when the grasslands transform into a striking golden-red tapestry.
