Mankusen Shrine
An ancient shrine which is said to be the last stop for the 8 million gods in Izumo, where the gods gather in the month of Kamiari-zuki.
In the month of Kamiari-zuki (October on the lunar calendar), the gods from all over Japan gather in Izumo. It is said that the last stop for the gods visiting Izumo is the Mankusen Shrine. Officially called "Makuse-No-Yashiro," it is said that the gods hold a meeting here before departing for their respective lands.
The four deities are Kushimikenu-no-Mikoto, Sukunahikona-no-Mikoto, Ponamuchi-no-Mikoto, and Yaoyorozu-no-Kami, and they are said to bring peace under the heavens, a good harvest, prosperity of various industries, healing of illness, safety in travel, and fulfillment of one's wishes.
In the precincts of the shrine, there is a Himorogi and a Iwasaka, where the gods from all over Japan dwell, and in front of them, there is the temple of Mankusen Shrine. Adjacent to it stands the main shrine of Tachimushi Shrine, which was relocated in 1670 and enshrines three of the deities of the shrine, including the three children of Susano-no-mikoto.
Their original designed ema (votive picture tablet) drawn by Himaru Nagasaki, a popular illustrator, using the gods of Naorai as motifs, is also popular for its cute designs.
