Taisho Romantic Dream Street

Nestled in the charming streets of Kawagoe, this shopping street exudes a retro ambiance reminiscent of the Taisho era. The street stretches for 160 meters, paved with granite cobblestones, flanked by tiled-roof townhouses, Western-style stone buildings, and traditional storehouses.

Originally known as "Kawagoe Ginza Shopping Street," it is one of the most historic shopping streets in the prefecture. Previously fitted with an arcade, it was removed in 1995 (Heisei 7), and the electrical wires were buried underground, transforming it into an open space with expansive skies. Today, about 35 unique stores, ranging from long-established businesses dating back to the Edo and Meiji periods to recent startups, line the street, making it an ideal spot for searching for Kawagoe souvenirs.

The street also offers a variety of snacks perfect for strolling, including banana juice from an Okinawan goods store and takosen & ebisen from a greengrocer. Visitors can leisurely explore the shops or enjoy a rickshaw ride that complements the retro landscape. From late March to early May, the annual event "Oyoge Koinobokun" is held, where countless colorful carp streamers, colored by locals, flutter overhead.
