The city of Ibusuki, settled at its perch on the southern tip of the Satsuma Peninsula in Kagoshima Prefecture, is a destination brimming with hot springs and over 1,000 unique spring sources across the city. This unique geothermal area was once shaped by volcanic activity, remaining today as a hub for traditional hot spring baths and the globally rare "sand bath" found only in Ibusuki.

Slip into the one-of-a-kind sand bath and fully recline in yukata up to shoulders beneath the sands warmed by natural hot spring water at around 55°C. Just 10 minutes in and your body will begin to steep with sweat, detoxing as the ocean waves serenade just nearby. Afterward, make your way to the public bath to wash off any excess sand and sweat for an invigorating sense of refreshment that draws repeat crowds to this day.

Sand bathing is a regional practice here kept for some 300 years as a form of thermal therapy, cherished by visitors who came from afar for its healing properties. In recent years, its benefits have been scientifically validated, attracting more people seeking not only relaxation but also detoxification and the balancing of their autonomic nervous system.
