Akame 48 Waterfalls

Varied falls and jaw-dropping beauty all year around at this revered natural retreat.

Last update :

The Takigawa River flows through Akame Town in Nabari City with upper reaches stretching into a series of waterfalls known as Akame 48 Waterfalls. The region stands long-loved as a sacred site and spiritual spot thanks to the tales of monks and ninjas who came here across the years to train.

A 3.3 km walking trail skirts the waterfalls, offering a three-hour route along the 23 named waterfalls, each with a distinct character all its own. Among them, the "Akame Gobaku" or Five Famous Waterfalls, are must-see highlights. Look up and all around to see lush natural landscapes that take up a new look each season—from fresh greenery to vibrant autumn leaves. From fall to winter, the area is illuminated at night, creating a glowing mystique and hum around the waterfalls and bamboo lanterns.

Just steps from the start of the trail you’ll find a few spots to drop in, including the Japan Salamander Center, which exhibits the giant salamanders that inhabit the Takigawa River and Ninja Forest, where visitors can experience various ninja training activities. Eco-tours are also available to fully appreciate the natural beauty of Akame.
