Katsuren Castle Ruins

A stunning castle ruin built atop natural cliffs.

Last update :

Located in the central region of Okinawa’s main island, atop the hills of the Katsuren Peninsula, these castle ruins are renowned as the former residence of Amawari, a 15th-century lord who brought prosperity to Katsuren through overseas trade. In 2000, the site was designated a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site.

Built using the natural cliffs as a foundation, Katsuren Castle was considered an impregnable fortress. A visit today boasts the striking elegance of sloping stone walls, and views from the topmost area in full 360-degree panorama, earning it rank among Okinawa's most scenic spots. Peer out to the north to find the mountains encircling Kin Bay and the islands of Uruma City, while views to the south give way to views of the Chinen Peninsula, Kudaka Island, and the Nakagusuku Castle Ruins.

Amawari Park opened at the base of the castle in 2021, complete with details of the history and culture of Katsuren Castle and Uruma City through exhibits of excavated artifacts, photographs, and videos. On weekends and public holidays, dynamic live performances bring the story of Amawari to life, adding an engaging cultural experience to your visit.
