Jigoku Mushi Kobo Kannawa
Experience the bold flavors of Beppu’s traditional Jigoku Mushi (hell-steamed cooking).
Jigoku Mushi Kobo Kannawa is a multi-purpose facility where visitors can experience Beppu’s famous Jigoku Mushi (hell-steamed cooking), a specialty of the Kannawa Onsen area, known for its rising steam and rich hot spring culture. This traditional cooking method, which dates back to the Edo period, utilizes 98°C geothermal steam to naturally cook food, making it a truly unique culinary experience. Given its popularity, long lines often form on weekends.
The process is simple: place fresh ingredients such as vegetables, seafood, and eggs into a steaming basket, then, with the staff’s guidance, insert it into the Jigoku Mushi Kama (steaming pot) filled with thick geothermal steam. The natural salt content in the steam enhances the flavor, locking in the ingredients’ natural umami.
A variety of ingredient sets are available, including the "Jigoku Mushi Tamatebako", which features seasonal vegetables, chicken, and meat buns, as well as the "Meat Set". Nearby, the Pocket Park features accessible foot baths and foot steamers, as well as a drinking spring known for its health benefits.
