Constructed in 1185 to welcome Minamoto no Yoshitsune, the castle stood atop a rock mountain 325 meters above sea level, formed by the pyroclastic flow of Mount Aso. Its location on sheer cliffs and the impressive stone walls earned it the reputation of being invincible. Although the buildings within the castle were dismantled after its abandonment, the stone walls remain, allowing visitors to sense the grandeur of the large fortress it once was. The magnificent high stone walls stretching from the north side of the third enclosure to the second enclosure are especially worth seeing.

Surrounded by magnificent nature, Oka Castle ruins offer different scenic beauty with each season. In winter, the stone walls are covered with pure white snow, while in spring, the castle is vividly decorated with blooming cherry blossoms. The "Oka Castle Sakura Festival" held every April, featuring a procession of feudal lords and armored warriors, adds to the festivity.

Walking routes within the castle are well-maintained, with the shortest course taking about 40 minutes and a more comprehensive tour lasting about 120 minutes. Along the way, visitors can enjoy splendid views of Mount Aso and the Kuju mountain range.
