Yokai Shrine sits along Mizuki Shigeru Road, known as a quirky destination surrounded by bronze statues of yokai, or Japanese monsters. The shrine's most distinctive feature is its torii gate, designed to resemble Ittan Momen (a famous yokai). The shrine is dedicated to a black granite stone and a 300-year-old zelkova tree, both imbued with the spirit of GeGeGe no Kitaro creator Shigeru Mizuki.

The shrine’s grounds are filled with whimsical yokai-themed objects, with the Ittan Momen torii being a true standout. Before paying your respects, you’re your way to the Medama Oyaji Purification Fountain for a chance to cleanse yourself in front of a stone carving of the iconic character from GeGeGe no Kitaro. Clapping during the ritual is said to summon the yokai, adding an element of playful interaction that makes this shrine especially popular with children.

The shrine's famous fortune-telling machine is a must-try. For 200 yen, a mechanical yokai offers blessings and presents your fortune in a capsule. There are five different yokai dolls, and part of the fun is seeing which one delivers your fortune. Be sure to check out the shrine's yokai-themed ema (votive plaques) and talismans, too!
