Choshi Ocean Research Institute - Choshi Dolphin Watching

Experience the grandeur of nature on a dolphin and whale watching tour off the coast of Choshi.

Last update :

Located near Choshi Marina, the waters off Choshi are a unique nature spot where the Oyashio and Kuroshio currents collide, creating a rich fishing ground that attracts wild dolphins and whales. The institute offers year-round dolphin and whale watching tours, providing visitors with an opportunity to observe these majestic creatures up close.

The types of animals you may encounter vary depending on the season and tour. Offshore tours, conducted about 30 km from the coast, allow you to witness dolphins swimming near the boat or leaping out of the water. Rare sightings of whales, which are typically hard to see on Japan’s main islands, add to the excitement. During spring, lucky visitors might spot pods of 2,000 to 5,000 dolphins, while in autumn, they may encounter groups of around 50 whales. Families with small children can opt for coastal dolphin-watching tours, which last 1 to 1.5 hours and are open to children aged 3 and older.

In addition to wildlife tours, the institute offers scenic Sunset Cruises on weekends and holidays, providing stunning views of Byobugaura cliffs and the setting sun from the sea. The New Year’s First Sunrise Cruise is another popular experience.
